Viking River Cruises is the better option for all cruisers, generally. Those boats are even smaller than the Viking Ocean, but they don’t tend to rock as much and usually run smoother. It’s easy to stick to an itinerary despite bad weather when passengers can just hop off board and be bussed down the river. There seemed to be a hierarchy among performers and staff on the ship, and I didn’t like it. Staff in management and the Viking Vocalists (considered the most premium performers) were mostly white Europeans.
Viking Ocean Cruises Restaurants and Bars

Lots of Viking Ocean Cruises reviews have gotten the word out now since the Viking Star first debuted. We booked the Hotel Havnekontoret and were very happy with our choice. This was followed by several hours of on-your-own exploration before the train ride (with free German wines) back to the ship.

Moving on to amenities, Viking Cruises offers a range of options to keep passengers entertained and relaxed. Your sailing will always come with complimentary Wi-Fi; house wines, beers, and soft drinks with onboard lunches and dinners; coffee and hot tea available 24/7; and self-service launderettes. Viking Cruises also offers a range of wellness and fitness options on board, including a spa, fitness center, and yoga classes.
Day 5: Rhine River Castles & Koblenz, Germany
More than a little concerned by the comments about the food. BTW, just returned from a nearly two-month cruise on Oceania Marina -- which we booked after reading all the raves by Oceania fans about "best food at sea" -- and it was VERY disappointing. My husband and I are taking our first Viking cruise in May/June from Iceland to NYC so we are quite interested in what we will experience. We have sailed quite a few times on other lines so we can compare later.
What a cracking tour
Last but a far cry from least is a Viking Ocean Cruise highlight – the extraordinary spa with traditional Nordic elements like sauna, vitality pool, cold plunge tubs, and a Snow Grotto. Just received an email from Viking informing us that half of the Xmas markets we were suppose to visit will not be open. They marketed the cruise as a Xmas market cruise which is why we booked it. We get the email 3 days prior to our trip and they knew from the beginning the markets would not open until early December. A clear case of bait and switch and will cause us to never cruise with them again. What it is is a line that has focused very specifically on "thinking person's cruises" that offer a deeper dive into the destinations that its ships visit than is typical at many lines. It's all about exploring the world and doing so in comfort. If you're sure that Viking is your line, look for a travel agent who specializes in trips with the brand. Ten-night "Greek Odyssey" voyages to the Greek Islands start at $3,999 per person. That works out to roughly $800 per day for a couple sharing a room. Some of the line's more exotic sailings, such as its expedition trips to Antarctica, cost even more.

The Chef’s Table was an alternative restaurant where wine is paired with each course. The theme of the tasting menu rotates every three days, so be sure to check what options are available on the night of your choosing. Throughout the ship there are unique spaces where you can get away for a quiet read. Thus even with 930 guests onboard the ship never seems crowded. Even the main dining room, the Restaurant, is designed with partial wall breaks to simulate small dining areas. We're leaving on Viking Venus in 36 days for 15 days on the Trade Routes of the Middle Ages.

The large columns at the front of the space actually house the anchor chains. If you have a large group, you can reserve the private dining room between The Restaurant and Manfredi's. It seats 12 at one long table and is surrounded by racks housing the ship's wines.
Viking guests can either purchase drinks a la carte or buy the Silver Spirits beverage package. All passengers can order complimentary wine, beer and soft drinks at lunch and dinner. Just a bit of reading online will show you that Viking Air gets mixed reviews with some people being booked on circuitous routes to their destinations. We were booked on a direct flight from Boston to San Juan, Puerto Rico to begin our vacation. On the return Viking booked charter flights to transport passengers to Miami from Manaus.
Basel is an underrated tourist attraction and the third largest city in Switzerland. The town has a gorgeous Medieval center and plenty of world-class art museums. We arrived in the small, quaint town of Basel after our international flight. We had a wonderful time and especially loved how organized the entire Viking journey was, from pre-departure to on-board, everything was seamless.
Late-night nibbles weren’t found except for small charcuterie plates at the Explorer’s Lounge. I wish I could give a better review of Viking Ocean Cruises shore excursions, but I honestly think passengers should book independently to save money and assure quality. We weren’t impressed with how Viking handled the snafu in Dominica. Before you get too excited, know this isn’t an invitation to book whatever activity the cruise line offers.
We overheard several heated discussions about who had rights to which dryers and when. Don't wait until the last day of your trip to do your washing, as that's when the launderettes are the busiest. Alternatively, you can send out clothes to be washed and dried, pressed or dry cleaned for a fee. A bag is provided in your room, and you can select regular two-day service or same-day service for a 50% surcharge. Viking Polaris is a nonsmoking ship, and you cannot smoke indoors or on most outdoor decks. The only place you're allowed to smoke cigarettes, cigars and e-cigarettes is in the designated smoking area outside on the starboard side of Deck 6.
I highly recommend visiting this quaint medieval town. Every street looks perfectly preserved and it’s quite colorful. We wandered mostly on our own, ducking into gelato shops and chocolate stores while enjoying the colorful, medieval feel. On our second day, we sailed northward to dock at Breisach, Germany.
The ship boasts four onboard restaurants and a breathtaking spa that's open to all. If you want more relaxed, casual food with perhaps a table for just 2, the Aquavit upstairs is a great alternative. We had lunch a couple times there and it’s quite nice to see the river views and sit outside. Also unlike many other cruises or guided tours, almost everything was included, which made it feel like a truly relaxing vacation. Great ship, amenities, people and food, as well as excellent staff throughout.
Explorer’s Lounge was by far my favorite spot on the ship. Located at the helm, the bar’s panoramic views were breathtaking, and the seating was oh-so-comfortable, like your well-lived living room. In the morning, the Explorer’s Lounge operates Mamsen’s, which serves Nordic breakfast favorites inspired by Hagen’s mother’s recipes (definitely get the waffle with all the fixings). So many people contributed to making our trip special.
